Jamestown, Virginia - Jamestown was established in 1607 on the James River in Virginia, in what is currently James City County, about 45 miles (70 kilometers) southeast of Richmond, Virginia. Both the river and the new settlement were named for King James I who had recently ascended to the English throne.
